American Indian Cultural Corridor Master Plan
Minneapolis, Minnesota
The American Indian Cultural Corridor is an initiative of the Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI) and aims to encourage economic activity and transit-oriented development that celebrates American Indian identity through culturally-based place-making. The goal of the overall project is to transform this fragmented urban corridor into a vibrant regional asset and cultural destination where community residents and regional visitors can come together to experience gatherings, arts, Indian-owned businesses, restaurants, and interactive learning environments. The master plan includes architectural and landscape design visions for multiple primary development parcels including the Franklin Business Center block, the Minneapolis American Indian Center Pow Wow Grounds site, the Native American Community Clinic, and the Anpetu Was’te Cultural Arts Market at Mino-Bimaadiziwin multifamily housing project at the Hiawatha Light Rail Station. Multiple development and place-making opportunities along the corridor are designated to create gateways, reconnect historic neighborhoods, improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, and create a stronger sense of American Indian geographic identity in this historically significant urban community.
